In this new course what you’re going to learn is to how to configure a Profibus-DP network in both STEP7 version 5.X and TIA Portal.

When you’re going to create a Profibus DP network, there is a hardware setup and also a software setup.

Hardware setup is taking a Profibus cable which is a usually in form of an RS-485 cable and connect your PLC to the remote station or the remote I/O that you have on the field.

Software setup, on the other hand, is configuring a Profibus-DP network in the software so that your PLC and the remote I/O station can actually talk to each other.

The whole idea of using Profibus-DP is to decentralize the network between the PLC and the field devices. That’s where the DP comes from. DP stands for Decentralized Peripherals.

Profibus-DP is here to help you, as a PLC programmer, to decentralize the network between the PLC and the field devices. By field devices, I mean the sensors and actuators that you have in the field or on the factory floor.

How does the PLC understand or know how to interpret the string of data that is received from the device and how to form the proper command string for the device.

The answer is the GSD File. GSD stands for “General Station Definition” and is a text file which allows the PLC to parse or interpret the incoming data stream from the device and to properly form a command string sent to the device. This file gives the device its identity or person...
