How to Configure Interrupt OBs?

How to Configure Interrupt OBs?

Instructor: Scott Sommer, PE, CAP

The Siemens S7 series of industrial PLCs provides a robust platform for programming and monitoring logical operations to control an endless variety of processes and equipment.

In this course, we demonstrate the use of special program blocks, called interrupt organization blocks to help control the flow of logic in the PLC and we introduce you to the most commonly used interrupt OBs.

How to Configure Interrupt OBs?
  • 1. What is an Interrupt OB?

In this video, you will learn how the PLC program flow is controlled using the main cyclic program OB, OB1, and the use of various types of interrupt OBs and you will also learn that different PLC models may have different available interrupt OBs.

  • 2. What is a Cyclic Interrupt OB?

In this video, you will learn the configuration of a "Cyclic Interrupt OB" and how it is implemented in two different S7 PLC models using a simple programming example and the S7-PLCSIM simulator.

  • 3. What is a Time-of-Day Interrupt OB?

In this video, you will learn the configuration of a Time-of-Day Interrupt OB and how it is implemented in two different S7 PLC models using a simple programming example and the S7-PLCSIM simulator.

  • 4. What is a Startup Interrupt OB?

In this lesson, we will show you what a Startup Interrupt OB is and how it is used, using programming examples and the S7-PLCSIM simulator.

A Startup Interrupt executes once when the CPU transitions from STOP to RUN. This type of interrupt is often used to reset any start commands so that equip...

  • 5. What is a Time-Delay Interrupt OB?

In this lesson, we will show you how to configure a Time-Delay Interrupt OB and demonstrate how it is used. The Time-Delay Interrupt is a bit different than the other interrupt OB’s that have been demonstrated.

The Time-Delay Interrupt OB is configured in the same manner regardless of the CPU...

  • 6. What is a Hardware Interrupt OB?

In this lesson, we will show you what a “Hardware Interrupt OB” is and how it is implemented in an S7-1516 PLC

A “Hardware Interrupt OB” executes once when the CPU detects a hardware interrupt condition in a digital input card, an analog input card, or a function module.

    This type of interrupt ...

  • 7. Additional Considerations for Interrupt OBs

In this video, we will complete the course on Interrupt OBs by identifying some of the more advanced features of Interrupt OBs and show how to provide a reliable, trouble-free use of Interrupt OBs in the Siemens S7-series PLC programs.

The newer S7 PLC CPU models can support configuration of man...
