How does the PLC understand or know how to interpret the string of data that is received from the device and how to form the proper command string for the device.
The answer is the GSD File. GSD stands for “General Station Definition” and is a text file which allows the PLC to parse or interpret the incoming data stream from the device and to properly form a command string sent to the device. This file gives the device its identity or personality.
In addition, most Profibus DP devices provide a wealth of diagnostic data to help the engineer or operator keep the device operating reliably.
In all PLC and DCS systems, there is a prescribed way that GSD files are made available to the system. In this video, we will learn how to install a GSD File on a Siemens S7-series PLC system which is programmed by the Siemens STEP7 software.
